Rockin Mama! Laci Friend....and her Sugar Fairy business

I feel like I am so blessed and always meeting amazing mamas. I want to start featuring various Rockin' Mamas on my blog and share their stories with you. You never know when you need a little somethin', somethin' from a Rockin' Mama! Raising kiddos today and running a business is no small task. Sometimes it's completely exhausting! All of the ROCKIN' MAMA's featured will primarily be women that have started their own business or run a business while staying at home. It is definitely something I can relate to right now and I'm so curious how other women keep a balance between work and kiddos. Maybe it is the never ending quest for women to find that balance...we try...but for some reason or another we feel like we always fall short. What do you think? Multi-talented Laci Friend, is my sweet sales consultant. If you take pictures with L. Hardin Portrait Design you will meet with her to choose your images. She also runs the SUGAR FAIRY and is mother of three! Not to mention many, many other things...

*Please tell us about your business and how you developed the concept for it? My business is called The Sugar Fairy...it is an at home bakery where we specialize in sweet treats that taste good and are customized to fit your party, event and personality. The Sugar Fairy offers gourmet cup-e-dee cakes, designer cakes, cake/brownie/cheesecake lollipops, decorated sugar cookies and all varieties of mini desserts and drop cookies.

*How did you choose your business name? I actually started with a different name, but it was way to stuffy and serious for me, so I changed it to The Sugar Fairy...I want people to feel magical and special when they receive treats from us. I also want them to think that the food for their event was so easy, no stress on them at all, like waving a magic (fairy) wand and that they were a perfect fit, just what they dreamed of, and of course the "sparkle."

*What makes your business so fabulous and awesome?? Well, I have had many sugary treats in my time...in fact I think I should have a degree in sugar consumption and I would graduate with honors...I would skip a meal for a good cookie! I have always felt either something tasted amazing but looked, well not so cute, or it looked amazing but it should have stayed on the table, because taste was sacrificed. My number one goal is to have both...it has to look amazing but it has to taste just as good!

*What are some of the "Hot" trends in your business? Cupcakes are a super hot trend that I hope stays around. They are so cute and delicious, with all of the flavor varieties , and so easy and pain free at an event to serve, The Lollipops are also a "new" concept and super cute!

*How many sweeties do you have and what are their names and ages? I have 3 little cupcakes at my house! Carter is almost 11, Cade is 7, and Ms. Ella is 3. They are my sweetest treasure!

* What is your favorite thing to do as a Rockin' Mama to relax and unwind? I don't know what that means, relax?? Seriously, it's not in my blood...even when I plan a relaxing event, I end up making it a party or a big deal and that adds 10 things to my to-do list :)

*How do you make sure your a Rockin' Mama to your kiddos while running your own business? I hope to be showing my children many things with the Sugar Fairy. Every moment is a teachable moment. I want them to see hard work and dedication, to give more than 100% in everything you do, do it to the very best of your ability and don't cut corners...when you put your name on it make sure you are proud of the work. i hope they find a love for baking/cooking like their dad and I do...to me the way to the heart is through the stomach...I love to have lots of friends and family surrounding me and the sound of laughter, fun and love always revolves around the food table. I do think there is a balance, and no one in my family is obese :), but enjoy life. I hope they see my love for them. We spend most of our time in the kitchen and I try to involve them as much as possible in the process so that, even at work, we are still together.

*What is your biggest challenge as a work at home mama? Balance. That is my biggest challenge in everything...I am a work-a-holic and I can't say no. I always have to be aware of overdoing it.

*If you could go on vacation tomorrow where would it be and why? Hard one...depends on who I am going with. Anywhere my family is! i really want to go to Hawaii, I want to travel to other countries and see all of them. I also really want to go to Israel/Jerusalem and stand in the exact spot that Jesus stood. That would be cool!

*What is something people probably don't know about you? If you know me at all, you probably know all of it. I am an open book...no secrets with me.

*Do you have a website/shop/boutique? I don't have a website or a store? I work from home. To reach me, you can call, text, email or facebook. We had a lot of fun shooting for the Favorite Face Contest! We got to meet some real QT pies! Can't wait for tomorrow. We didn't really know what to expect and we thought we would give a little sneak peek from last Tuesday! We are shooting tomorrow for the contest as well and we are totally booked so it's going to be a little hectic and crazy (but I will have lots of great help:) and hopefully I'll get a little break at some point...we even had to add some slots so THANKS to all who donated! We thought we would try something new and team up with Rylee & Reece boutique ( if you haven't been in there they have some absolutely adorable clothes! Sooo... We're holding a contest which benefits the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Just in case some of you may not know in the fall I'm running in my first half marathon, the Nike Women's Marathon held in San Francisco, with some girlfriends. Actually, I may not be running the whole way ( because I'm NOT a runner) but I thought it would be for a good cause and a fun girl trip. Although the kicker is I need to raise about $4,000 and I know this is NOT a good year for that so I thought what better way to raise money...to give my time and talent:) A sad fact is that some form of cancer will touch each and every one of us at some point in our lives. My mom passed away a couple years ago battling breast cancer. Next week alone in the US, fifty patients will be newly diagnosed with a blood cancer. LLS's mission is to help fund laboratory research in hopes of one day finding a cure. It will also help fund testing for a potential bone marrow donors and families in need of medical research. So if you want to help a good cause and possibly have a chance for your child to enter the National Model search which benefits another wonderful organization www.NILMDTS.com which gives help for families whose world turns upside down when a baby dies. I really can't explain how much I love these sweet little bebes'. They just fill my heart with joy! I especially love meeting new families, it totally takes me back to when I first had my little guy...I didn't want to put him down, it was hard to let him cry, I could barely get a shower in let alone get myself ready for the day. You really need to stop and check it out, there are some other fab stores as well in the quaint little shopping district. And on September 26th the Delano District will have what they call "FINAL FRIDAY" and we will be the FEATURED ARTIST for BUNGALOW 26...we will be displaying our images all throughout the store. She will have wine and cheese and even a DJ so stop by from 6-9pm or so and check it out. It should be lots of fun!

I love when I get repeat families and each year you watch them grow. It's such a blessing and this family is no exception, the kiddos are gorgeous and their new addition fits in just fine. It was pretty hot and humid when we shot these outside the other day and the kiddos did great...mom and I were sweating but, that's beside the point, right! As for the shot with the "little piggies" mom wanted this shot really bad, (you know when you have something in your head) it was a bit of a challenge, but we did it and I really think it's pretty sweet but I always looove photographing all the little parts! Thanks mom for being so relaxed, it truly helps:) I appreciate it!

When they came over their mom had a suitcase and a couple other big bags with her...as she walked up I could tell she was embarrassed because she brought sooo much stuff BUT little did she know I LOVED it!!! This shoot was literally almost 3 hours long, I could of shot them all day and trust me I think the kids would of let me:) They were coming up with ideas! How cool was that! Most kiddos seriously are done with pictures in about 30-45 minutes tops but we had so much fun we just kept going. That's one reason why I don't ever have a time limit on my sessions...so we can play. Can't wait for you to see the rest of the images mom!

I shot this precious little girl yesterday she was 5 days old. Such a perfect, fun shoot! Her parents and grandma came and were so sweet and VERY relaxed (which I think helps as well) they just let me be as creative as I wanted to, can't wait to show you the pictures mom! This is exactly why we always stress we want the newborns preferably under 10 days old, you really can do so much with them the younger they are:) Thank YOU!

Last weekend one of my very best friends came to visit with her family and we did all kinds of pictures. We had a blast! We got to veg out by the pool and got some much needed girl time in. MY PERSONAL QUEST TO BLOG MORE!!!

As I said yesterday my husband went with me to my photography conference last week and the way I bribed him to go was to make a vacation out of it. We flew to Nashville which was so fun! Both he and I love to go to different venues and listen to live music, believe me we saw some talented singers and songwriters one of which I bought his CD and can't put it down, he has such a great voice. We also went to the Grand Ole Opry and saw Jewell, Darrius Rucker and Charlie Daniels just to name a few. If any of you have been to Nashville you know you have to stop by Tootsies, and the Country Music Hall of Fame it was very cool. Here's a couple pics from there...

Although we did not stop there we drove to Franklin TN which was a charming, quaint small town where Keith Urban and Tim McGraw both reside with their beautiful families AND we went to Lynchburg TN to tour the Jack Daniels Distillery (because my husband is a big Jack Daniells fan) which honestly I wasn't to excited about but it ended up being very interesting and i got some great photos.

Last week I got back from a photography conference in Huntsville AL. with the AMAZING Heather Bookout! She is so creative and inspiring and actually taught me how to work smarter and faster so THANK YOU for giving me my life back:) I LOVE and APPRECIATE the tips and tricks she taught us and can't thank her enough. Her studio is FAB! We even got to watch her in action and shot along with her as well. Good Times! I shot this beautiful senior the other day and I swear she "COULDN'T OF TAKEN A BAD PICTURE!" We had a lot of fun, she pretty much brought her WHOLE closet, which I LOVED because we had soooo many options and with each outfit she was fully accessorized which was even better! BELLA and MAX

Over the break Christa and I adopted new additions to our families. Little Puggles, Bella is my little black one and Max is Christa's little one. They are brother and sister and they are the cutest, sweetest little puppies ever! They are sooo loving and even more snuggly! The kiddos absolutely adore them! Welcome home Bella and Max, we love you!

These are the Maize 5th Grade WARRIORS. Who just happen to be 8-0... so far this season. Most of them have played together for a couple of years now so it's been fun watching them grow. As you see Scott is the coach and my middle son, Cole plays on the team while my older son, Layne keeps the stats. We missed the team pictures so we decided to have fun and do something totally different. I don't ever shoot TEAM PICS but...I'd have to say...I think it turned out pretty cool! GO WARRIORS!!

This is how I feel:) I'm seeing an end to the '07 Christmas Card season. YEAH! My schedule lightens up in December so I can attempt to shop and enjoy the reason for the season with my family. I can't tell you how much fun my job is especially when I see the same kiddos year to year it's fun to watch them grow and be a part of their life. I met these beautiful girls last year...their daddy is Mike Drumright he is the awesome builder who built my house and new studio. He did a great job, I'm so happy to have finally moved in. So for any of you who may be looking to build check him out...INK Drumright constuction.

Kansas City in the fall, is just beautiful! I went up to visit one of my best friends and we had a ball! Look at her family, they are so adorable. I haven't got a chance to really look at all of her pics but thought this was just amazing, wish we had something like that here in Wichita. Not only did we have a fun photo shoot but we also did a little shopping in some small towns around KC. We went to Nell Hills in Atchison KS (great little home decorating store), and Parkville, which I found a red and black antique chair I will be shooting pics on. Can't wait to go back up there!

Back from the BIG ISLAND!!!!!

We had such a good time in Hawaii! We went with two very good friends who celebrated their 10 year anniversary and just had a ball. As you can see the sunsets were beautiful:) And of course I made everyone get dressed up for a little photo shoot, the guys were such good sports! We were able to experience so many cool things...we saw the whole island from a helicopter which was awesome. It was a much needed break and now it's back to reality and the hectic life of 3 boys playing football, getting ready for school, and the Christmas season. If you are wanting a session for those Christmas cards we are almost full...we have five appts left in Oct. and a few in Nov. so please try to plan ahead and give us a call if you would like to schedule.

I think I must have the best job in the world! I get to meet so many different people everyday. This family was so sweet and fun to work with...we a really good time. They were up for anything even back by my rocks which were squishy, squishy, squishy between our toes because of all the rain. And just look what a beautiful couple they make:)

This little one Alaina was so fun to shoot...you never know what mood a baby is going to be in and she was so mellow and she just let us play so we took full advantage. I had her on different chairs outdoors, inside...you name it just wanted to give you a peek mom and just to warn you there are lots of beautiful pictures!!! Can't wait for you to see them.

This is Giavanna Alexandra my new little God-daughter. I love her!!! I spent the last week in Flordia getting to know this new little one and we bonded. She is such a good baby and since most of you know I have 3 boys so to have a little girl like this is all new to me. Giavanna is definately going to be a social bug... just like her mama you can totally tell. She loves to be around people and the more the merrier it was to cute. And the way her big brother Alex took care of her that was priceless she is one lucky girl.

I haven't been doing very good at keeping up with my blog...So I'm going to try a little harder I just got back from vacation and I am an editing machine tonite and this picture took me back to the other morning...I had to share this, this little guy said "I don't like getting my picture taken but I'll do it!" He was a trooper too. This is his favorite hat and when I asked him to put it on he just lit up, like a totally different kid, wow!

Just the Girls! My niece, Edie celebrated her 10th birthday party on May 5th. Since I have the 3 boys I was asked to help with her birthday party, which was so fun! We decided to do a little photo shoot around the neighborhood, they were too cute! She is the one that is not in a hot pink shirt with the blonde hair. She is such a sweetie. Her teacher even stopped by for a short visit. Makes me want to have a little girl!

As most of you know by now we are moving to our NEW studio next week!!! We are SOOO EXCITED! This has been a long awaited process. I can't wait for everybody to see it. We also have a new addition to our family as if our life hasn't been hectic enough. His name is Bandit aka Little Buddy. He is a min pin and we adopted him from the rescue shelter. He is 2-years-old and is such a good boy! He is very mellow and laid back and fits into our family very well. His favorite place to sleep is on my leopard chair...he has fabulous taste:)
